Description:

You will serve as a WELDER in the PRODUCTION RESOURCES DEPARTMENT, STRUCTURAL SHOP (CODE 920) of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD - POINT LOMA DETACHMENT, SAN DIEGO CALIFORNIA.

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSIITON WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION such as:
  • Applying a variety of manual welding processes to make more difficult welds, including welds in hard to reach areas.
  • Planning and laying out work from blueprints, sketches, drawing, specifications, and work orders.
  • Operating various types of electrical arc-welding and cutting equipment by the manual, semi­ automatic methods, such as gas-metal-arc, gas-tungsten-arc, submerged-arc, manual-metal arc welding, plasma-arc cutting, arc-air-gouging, and more.
  • Determining the welding method to use, and selecting the right material to use, such as electrodes, filler-wire, flux, and etc.
  • Understanding and applying applicable safety rules and regulations.
